Capture

Eight ways to take the screen.

Every mode is one click from the island, or a number you already remember.

1

Area

Drag a rectangle. The rest of the desktop stays dimmed.

2

Fullscreen

The active display, no selection required.

3

Window

Snap to the window under the cursor and lock to its bounds.

6

Scrolling

Stitch a long page into one image while you scroll.

5

Record

MP4 or GIF, with audio, click rings and a camera PiP.

4

OCR

Tesseract runs locally. Text hits the clipboard on release.

T

Translate

Capture a region and send the words to the provider you picked.

8

Annotate

Arrows, redaction, counters and crop — in the same app.

Record

MP4 or GIF, with the take you actually meant.

A countdown, a red border so you know it is rolling, click highlights, a live key overlay, and a circular camera PiP that fades when you hover it.

  • System audio and mic — capture both, or neither.
  • Cursor smoothing — no jittery pointer in the final cut.
  • Trim before export — the recording editor opens on stop.

Annotate

Arrows, redaction, counters, crop.

The editor is built in — no round trip to another app. Pick a tool in the black bar on the demo and draw straight on the frame.

  • Pixelate anything you should not have screenshotted.
  • Numbered counters for step-by-step walkthroughs.
  • Beautify adds padding, a shadow and a backdrop in one click.

Read, store, share

Text is a capture type.

Capto reads the screen, translates it, files it, and hands you a link — without a Capto account existing anywhere.

Translate

Seven providers. One shortcut.

Start with the keyless built-in provider, then plug in your own key when you want a specific model. Translate a captured region, the current selection, or something you type.

OCR

Grab the words, not the pixels.

Tesseract runs on your machine. Text lands on the clipboard before you have finished letting go of the mouse.

Cloud share

Your bucket. Not ours.

Capto writes the object and copies the public HTTPS link. Uninstall it tomorrow and every file is still yours.

1 day 30 days Forever
History

Searchable, with a retention you pick.

Every capture and recording stays in History under %APPDATA%\Capto for as long as you say — and no longer.

capto://grab/area?copy=true
Automation

Drive it from anywhere.

Turn on automation URLs and any app, script or Stream Deck can trigger a capture. Image files open straight into the editor.

Privacy

Private by default.

No account, no telemetry, no Capto cloud. API keys and bucket credentials are sealed with Windows DPAPI, never plain text. Capto contacts trycapto.app only to check for and download signed software updates; every other network call is one you configure — your storage or your translation provider.

How it works

Three keys, then get on with it.

Summon the island

Hit a global shortcut or click the tray icon. The pill expands at the top of the screen with every tool one click away.

Pick your surface

Region, window, display, or a scrolling pane. The desktop dims, a crosshair and magnifier appear, and the size readout follows your drag.

Do something with it

Quick Access appears with copy, save, annotate, pin and upload. Or skip it — the file is already where your settings said it should go.

Shortcuts

Alt + Shift, then the number you remember.

Twelve global shortcuts ship enabled, and every one of them is remappable in Settings. Try one right now — the demo above will react.

Questions

The short answers.

Is it really free?
Yes. The Windows installer is free and there is no account, trial or paywalled tool. Bring your own keys if you want a specific translation provider or cloud bucket.
Where do my screenshots go?
Wherever you point them. By default captures and recordings live under %APPDATA%\Capto and show up in History. Cloud share is opt-in and writes to storage you own.
Does OCR need internet?
No. OCR uses Tesseract locally. Translation is the only feature that talks to a network, and only to the provider you picked.
Can I change the shortcuts?
All of them, in Settings → Shortcuts. Conflicts are detected as you record the new combination.
What are the requirements?
Windows 10 or 11 on x64. The installer is NSIS and does not need admin rights for a per-user install.
